I watched President Obama’s TV address this afternoon and was gratified to hear him cite the important role of values in the conduct and character of our elected officials, in our men and women who serve in the military and in each and every one of us as responsible citizens of a great nation.
The three values he referenced were:
COURAGE COMMITMENT & COMMON PURPOSE
Truly it is the role of leadership to embody values that bring meaning into our lives. And truly it is our own individual values that make a life worth living.
In times like these when confidence is low and fear is rampant, take a step back and look at who you are and what you are standing for.
Are you joining in the blame game that in effect is a cowardly retreat from responsibility?Or are you constantly seeking solutions and taking personal responsibility for your decisions and your choices.
Are you adopting an attitude of pessimism and cynicism? Why not hold on to hope and faith and know that your individual attitude and actions make a difference. Choose to make a positive difference.
As we face changes as a nation, as you face challenges as an individual, be guided by your best attributes. In tough times call on your courage. when challenges persist and failures compound, stick to your commitment to your life and the lives that you affect; be determined to make the world around you a better place.
As a leader remind others of their shared purpose, keep the vision alive. As a citizen remember we are one nation; judgement and righteousness are not leadership values. Altruism is however which is moving beyond self interest to serve the greater good.
We can do it. You can do it. We can create the future that we want. The future will reflect who we are as people, as a nation and what we value. Lets move beyond”mine” “my way”,”greed”, “numerical measures of success”; we are not defined by the Dow Jones; we are defined by the effectiveness of our common democracy to sustain vibrant living. Lets return to courage, commitment, altruism, and working together for a common purpose.
Change starts with your courage, your commitment, your purpose driven actions.
