DEAR STEVE JOBS

Steve and John Sculley, 2011

To: Steve Jobs
From: Betty Shotton
Date: October 24,2011

Dear Steve,

I’m not sure you will remember me but I wrote you a letter in August of 1985.

At the time I was thirty three and smack dab in the middle of my first start-up. I knew who you were and had followed your entrepreneurial adventure with great interest. I totally related to your uniquely 70’s quest for meaning, ranging from Buddhist retreats to getting high and defying everything conventional. I also related to your turn towards creativity and innovation; a re- direction of youthful energy that paved the way for the amazing things that you would accomplish in your lifetime. Read More

CNBC OP-ED The Gift of Adversity by Betty Shotton

An Executive Editor at CNBC.com asked my PR firm Monteiro & Co, if they knew of an author who could write on their experiences as being a woman in a man’s world of business. They got me. This was the first time anyone has asked me “how did you do it?”. It was like turning on a faucet. I wrote six pages that had to be edited to 500 words.

And here it is! Thanks TJ (Thomas Jefferson).     http://www.cnbc.com/id/44904943

INVESTOR’S DAILY Interview with Betty Shotton, Author of LIFTOFF LEADERSHIP 9-30-2011

When you hold yourself and others accountable for actions good or bad, you build a culture where people don’t make excuses. They’re able to reach their full potential. “It’s essential to investigate causes (of problems), but not to blame anyone or anything as an excuse for not taking action,” Betty Shotton, an Ocracoke, N.C.-based former CEO who started six companies, told IBD. “You need leaders to step up.”

• Sweat the small stuff. Don’t let little transgressions go, says Shotton, author of “Liftoff Leadership.” Cover up a minor detail, and you could be headed for bigger trouble.

Instead, be accountable no matter the problem’s size. That attitude will carry across the whole firm. “Integrity means every part of the whole is working,” she said. Read More

THE PERFECT LEADER ?

The Thinker by Rodin

THE PERFECT LEADER?

When I was researching current leaders that exemplified the attributes I was writing about for LIFTOFF LEADERSHIP, I repeatedly ran into a dilemma. It seemed that just as soon as I had found a great example of someone with integrity, when I dug deeper I found some dirt. The same was true for accountability, balance and altruism.

When I was researching altruism, I would look up recognized names and find beautiful examples of their unselfish contributions to the greater good. And then in a discussion with someone they would say, did you know that that person misrepresented information on a financial statement? Or did you know that that person’s organization is being cited for an EPA violation ? Read More

Leadership’s Role in Shaping Our Future

Balance is a universal law and when extremes are reached, forces will appear to level the playing field whether those fields are financial systems, governments, societies, or the environment. We are witnessing pervasive imbalances in all corners of society worldwide and are seeing counter balancing forces at work.
This is a time of opportunity.
What is needed is leadership that is willing to courageously act  beyond self interest and self preservation and make decisions for the sustainability of the greater good.
68 % of Americans lack trust and confidence in leadership(2010National Leadership index). This lack of trust is at all levels and in all segments of business, government, military, and politics. This does not bode well for the future because leaders set the example and provide the framework for the future. If they can’t be trusted, they can not be effective.
Leaders are continuing to operate under the failing paradigm of more is better; wealth=success. This is evidenced in the ongoing political conversations of how  each side will economically fix everything. It is evidenced by the dominance of consumer driven media and the emphasis on external gratification as the solution to whatever ails us.
The Friedman model is collapsing  under its resultant  excesses.
It is up to leadership to determine how the dominoes will fall.
This is a golden opportunity for leaders to step up and insist that their products and services are of benefit to people and the planet.
It is the time for leaders to insist that profitability is joined by meaningful contribution to lives and livelihoods.
It is an opportunity for educators and leaders at all levels to teach fundamental values of goodness; to teach the young that in the end what matters is relationships, compassion, courage, altruism, hope and a life well lived.
Universal forces of nature will continue to insist that things be brought back to center. What center looks like in the future for our civilization will be up to the values that we embrace as leaders and as a society.
Will we as leaders insist on meaningful contribution in our role modeling? Will we lead by example through courage, vision, faith, hope, integrity and altruism?
Or will we continue on a path that is not working where the the rich get richer, the poor poorer and violence and discontent continue?
Leaders are role models.
Change starts with one. Start by checking out your own example. Commit to a higher path. Elevate your perspectives beyond numerical success.
We all have choices. The future will be determined by them.
Continue the conversations of meaningful contribution … take it into schools, MBA programs, strategy sessions, in Congress!

Three Attributes to Overcome Fear and Move through Setbacks

I watched President Obama’s TV address this afternoon and was gratified to hear him cite the important role of values in the conduct and character of our elected officials, in our men and women who serve in the military and in each and every one of us as responsible citizens of a great nation.

The three values he referenced were:

COURAGE    COMMITMENT & COMMON PURPOSE

Truly it is the role of leadership to embody values that bring meaning into our lives. And truly it is our own individual values that make a life worth living.

In times like these when confidence is low and fear is rampant, take a step back and look at who you are and what you are standing for.

Are you joining in the blame game that in effect is a cowardly retreat from responsibility?Or are you constantly seeking solutions and taking personal responsibility for your decisions and your choices.

Are you adopting an attitude of pessimism and cynicism? Why not hold on to hope and faith and know that your individual attitude and actions make a difference. Choose to make a positive difference.

As we face changes as a nation, as you face challenges as an individual, be guided by your best attributes. In tough times call on your courage. when challenges persist and failures compound, stick to your commitment to your life and the lives that you affect; be determined to make the world around you a better place.

As a leader remind others of their shared purpose, keep the vision alive. As a citizen remember we are one nation; judgement and righteousness are not leadership values. Altruism is however which is moving beyond self interest to serve the greater good.

We can do it. You can do it. We can create the future that we want. The future will reflect who we are as people, as a nation and what we value. Lets move beyond”mine” “my way”,”greed”, “numerical measures of success”; we are not defined by the Dow Jones; we are defined by the effectiveness of our common democracy to sustain vibrant living. Lets return to courage, commitment, altruism, and working together for a common purpose.

Change starts with your courage, your commitment, your purpose driven actions.

Our future is in your hands. What will you make of it?
